Insurance first, THEN motor carrier authority

Many a prospective trucker has made this fatal mistake. They buy, rent, or lease a truck which they intend to use to haul freight across the country. They get their motor carrier authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and a DOT number, and figure they’re ready to go. But wait, what about insurance? A trucker has to have at least a million dollars worth of liability coverage, and it’s not inexpensive. It’s certainly not cheap if you have any infractions on your driver’s license for the past 5 years. If you’re thinking about getting into trucking, insure you can get affordable insurance BEFORE you proceed.
