I guess back in the old days, they were much more into doing mentalist tricks, like psychic stuff. Nowadays, they do tricks like levitation ,and making things disappear. But back in the old days I guess it was popular to speak with dead people. It was a bonus if you got a volunteer from the audience to come up on stage to help, and then make them faint by freaking them out. That was the spooky part, all the tricks they did to make it look like there were all these ghosts and stuff around.
