I tried and tried to explain that you are never too old to follow your dreams but he balked at the idea. But then one day he must have had an epiphany and decided that he was not going to waste another minute of his life wishing he could do something and signed up for a Spanish course. He is enjoying his classes and is happier than he has been in a long time.
