Its grandeour is today somewhat dog-eared’ its environs stifling, and sticky and yet you cannot be indifferent to it. Despite its apparent decay, hunger, poverty, and injured dignity Kolkata remains forever a great centre of art’ culture, trade and commerce and intellectual pursuits. The heart of Kolkata, the Benoy Badal-Dinesh Bagh (BBD Bagh/Dalhousie Square) is conspicuous with the writer’s Building housing the Secretariat of the State Government, the G.P.O, the Tourist Bureau and Railway Booking Office’ South of BBD Bagh is the Maidan, a green open expanse, 3 sq’ kms’ dotted with clumps of trees and crisscrossed by road.
